The AS/400 Model P03 is a 9401-class machine and was sold as an entry-level machine for developers.
Software Compatibility
The Model P03 is compatible with OS/400 V3R1 through V3R2.
License Tape
Depending on the processor option installed, a license tape may be required when reinstalling the operating system:
- Option 2114: No license tape required
- Option 2115: License tape required, Part Number XXXXXX (RPQ xxxxxx) "All Models FULIC" may be used
Hardware
The Model P03 comes with 8 MB of Main Storage in its base configuration, and can be expanded to a maximum of 48 MB. A variant of the P03, the Model 10S, can be expanded to 56MB of Main Storage. It can support a maximum of 2 GB of disk storage (unprotected) across a maximum of two DASD, with no option for a dedicated RAID controller.
An internal Mini-QIC drive was available as an option, and the system features an external SCSI port so external tape drives like the 7207 QIC-1000 tape drive can be used.
The Model P03 was sold in a Twinaxial and LAN configuration. The twinaxial configuration features a female DB-15 connector supporting up to 7 twinaxial devices. The LAN configuration omits the twinaxial connector and replaces it with a FC 9174 Ethernet or FC 9175 Token-Ring LAN adapter. When using the LAN configuration, the System Console is expected to be on the communications adapter, and an appropriate version of Client Access or Personal Communications must be used.
The MFIOP supports a maximum of two SPD adapters. The upper slot must be a communication line (FC xxxx one-line or FC xxxx two-line adapter), while the lower slot depends on which workstation adapter is configured. When in the twinaxial configuration, the lower slot is not used. When in the LAN configuration, the lower slot must be one of the two supported LAN adapters.
A LAN configuration P03 must have a compatible Ethernet or Token-Ring LAN adapter installed to ensure proper operation. If the LAN adapter is missing, the MFIOP will become confused and unsure of if the system is a twinaxial or LAN configuration, resulting in the system being unable to address above the base 8 MB of main storage, and will eventually blow the System Password resulting in a bricked system.
Console Cable
For LAN configuration machines, the system console is accessed through Personal Communications with a special cable on Port 2 of the serial brick. The pinout for this cable is as follows:
