The AS/400 Model 150 is a 9401-class machine and was sold as an entry-level machine for developers and System/36 operators. It is one of the first-generation PowerPC AS systems.

Software Compatibility

The Model 150 is compatible with OS/400 V3R5 through V5R1. However, the Model 150 is unique in that it is the only PowerPC AS-based system that does not require the use of license keys from V3R5 through V4R5, meaning that OS/400 and all licensed programs will run without purchasing extra licenses from IBM. In V5R1, IBM began to enforce the purchase of license keys on the Model 150 and so it is not recommended to run V5R1.

Being a first-generation PowerPC system, the Model 150 can run System/36 SSP through the use of Advanced/36 when running OS/400 up to V4R4.

Hardware

The Model 150 comes with 32 MB of main storage onboard and can be expanded to a maximum of 192 MB. The Model 150 can support a maximum of 32 GB of disk storage (unprotected) across a maximum of four DASD, with no option for a dedicated RAID controller.

A QIC tape drive was typically installed from the factory in either a 2/4 GB option or a 4/8 GB option. However, experiments from the IBM i Community have shown that certain models of Quantum LTO1 and LTO2 tape drives can be used in place of a QIC drive.

The planar board is equipped with 6 PCI slots, of which the lower 3 are wired for the AS/400, while the upper 3 are reserved exclusively for the Integrated PC Server option.

LAN support is available for the Model 150 in either a 10 Mbit Ethernet option (FC 2723) or a 16/4 Mbps Token-Ring option. A 10/100 Mbit Ethernet option can also be installed, but cannot be used by the AS/400 unless the Integrated PC Server option is installed and configured.
