The IBM 3174 Establishment Controller is a family of 3270-compatible workstation controllers primarily intended for use with the IBM System/370, 9370, ES/9000, System/390, and early zSeries mainframes. The 3174 Establishment Controller could connect to a host via the following transports:

  • System/370 Channel (Bus & Tag)
  • SDLC
  • Token-Ring
  • Ethernet
  • EIA-232

While the 3174 was typically used with mainframes, IBM supported the 3174 as a remote workstation controller in System/36 SSP and in OS/400.
